U nlike most actors who get anxious as their film's release date comes closer, Rani Mukherji is in a nostalgic mood as she remembers the time spent in Varanasi while shooting for Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, which releases tomorrow. "It was a lovely experience, we stayed for a month in a haveli next to the ghat, and like a family we bonded together. I have known Pradip da for a long time, as I have done a number of ad films with him.
Konkona and I always gel well together and Jaya aunty and I too bonded very well as always," she says rubbishing rumours about her strained relationship with the Bachchans. The actress again adds that she has "great respect for Jaya aunty" and shares a "warm relationship with the Bachchans." You then ask her if anything's cooking between her and Aditya Chopra and pat comes the reply, "It's all media hype. I have absolutely no plan of getting married in the near future."
Getting back to safer subjects like her film Rani reveals how much of her blood literally went into Laaga…"Konkona's wooden rattle (a toy) badly injured me on my nose and it started bleeding. Technically, I gave my blood to the film right from the first day," she jokes.
The portrayal of a courtesan or prostitute seems to be one of the must play roles for heroines globally. Right from Meena Kumari (Pakizah), Waheeda (Guide), Rekha (Umrao Jaan) to Madhuri (Devdas) and Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman), actresses have all taken on the above mentioned role and now Rani is doing the same with both Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Saawariya.
Rani claims to...
When asked why all great actresses experiment with this role, she quips, "I respect people like them. Circumstances might have forced these women to take up such a profession, but they are not harming anybody, nor are they a threat to our national security.
They also deserve their dignity. So, there's nothing wrong in playing such roles. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, rather than focusing on her profession, explores the girl's emotional journey and her state of mind as she lands in that profession and is exploited." In Saawariya, the focus isn't on Rani as she is just doing a cameo.
After playing so many different characters on screen, is there any role she is still keen to do? "Not at all. I have tried everything. What is left for me now is to play a man's role, I guess will be doing that too," adds Rani with a laugh. There is no must do role on her agenda, but the actress wouldn't mind visiting Hyderabad because she says she loves the beautiful structures, people and biryani in the city.
Apart from her two upcoming films, Rani will be seen in Kunal Kohli's next venture.
