It has officially been confirmed by Eros Multimedia, Mumbai and Ayangaran International that Rajnikanth will star in Shankar’s Robot to be produced by them with A. R Rahman composing the music. Cinematographer Nirav Shah and art director Sabu Cyril have been signed for this prestigious Rs. 100 cr. project that commences shoot in mid-2008. Efforts are on to rope in Deepika Padukone for the heroine’s role while Nayanatara is also billed to play in a major role.
But before this magnum opus goes to the sets, Rajnikanth is all set to star in a quickie for Guru K. Balachander. A remake of the Malayalam hit, Kadha Parayumbol, starring Mammootty and Sreenivasan, it will be directed by P. Vasu of Chandramukhi fame. A comic entertainer, it is about the friendship between a village barber and a superstar. Pasupathy is in all likelihood is to play the barber’s role.
The superstar now is also seen in an animated avatar in daughter Soundarya’s debut directorial venture Sultan The Warrior, produced by her Ocher Studios teamed with Adlabs.
“It is the first of its kind on any actor in South-East Asia. We spent about six to eight months on pre-production work and now 80 animators from our studio are working on the project that is estimated to cost around ten million US dollars. It is like any other feature film with a story, a hero, heroine, comedian and a villain plus punch dialogue and five songs tuned by A. R. Rahman, for one of which we plan to rope in an international singer. As for the characters, except for my father the others are computer -generated. Thota Tharani created the medieval settings. On quality it will be on par with any Pixar or Dream Works film,” said Soundarya addressing a media gathering after the theatrical release of the trailer at Inox, Chennai.
A die-hard fan of her father’s, she said the film is dedicated to his contribution to cinema. “A daughter’s gift to her father,” she said. Her mother and Chairperson of Ocher, Latha Rajnikant, said the film is mainly intended to promote talents. The film will be released in 12 world languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and English.
Rajnikanth will also star in a quickie, a bilingual in Tamil and Telugu, Kuselan, directed by P. Vasu. A remake of the Malayalam Christmas hit, Katha Parayumbol, the film is jointly produced by K. Balachander’s Kavithalaya and Vijay Kumar’s Seven Arts in Tamil. At the press conference held at Taj Coramandel recently to announce the project, producers K. Balachander, Vijay Kumar, Telugu version’s producer C. Aswini Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies and the original version’s hero Sreenivasan participated. The entertainer is about the friendship between a village barber and a superstar. Sreenivasan played the barber in the Malayalam version and Mammootty, the superstar. In Tamil Pasupathy and in Telugu Jagpathy Babu are roped in to play the village barber while Rajnikant will do his real-life role, of a superstar, in both the versions. “It is a privilege to produce a film with Rajnikanth and after a long hiatus he is acting in a straight Telugu film,” said a beaming Dutt on the occasion. The shooting will commence soon and likely to be a summer release.
