It is Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s constant refrain that the rain gods are on his side. Though many used to scoff at his claims, the fifth consecutive good monsoon literally washed away their sarcasm and left him beaming.
If there are any sceptics left, the antics of the rain gods in recent days would convince even them that Dr Reddy was right. After blessing the Chief Minister with copious rain, the rain gods are now pouring cold water on his political rivals. Erratic rains virtually spoiled the much-publicised programmes of the Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi and NTPP head, Mr T. Devender Goud, on Thursday.
Mr Naidu, who launched his campaign against corruption with much fanfare, could not address the public at the Ellampally project site in Adilabad because of an unexpected downpour. Tents collapsed in the heavy rain and people ran for shelter, leaving Mr Naidu to twiddle his toes angrily in his car. He finally had to make do with a televised address to a small gathering for 30 minutes. Similarly, rains also spoilt Chiranjeevi’s plans to visit the model village Gangadevipally in Warangal district.
The heavy showers forced the star to cancel his public meeting. He had to return after a brief interaction with local people. As if this was not enough, the skies opened up to soak up the grand finale of Nava Telangana party chief, Mr T. Devender Goud’s ‘Telangana self-respect’ tour near Indira Park. His scheduled Satyagraha also looked sodden. So the next time Dr Reddy swears by the rain gods, at least these three worthies would not dare to smirk.
