Thiruvananthapuram: S. Sanal Kumar is a rare law enforcer with the dual talent for penning lyrics and setting his lines to music. The 46-year-old Deputy Superintendent of Police has produced a musical album of love songs, which was released recently by poet O.N.V.Kurup.
Two of the eight songs in the album are rendered by playback singer Hariharan. Sanal says this is the first time Hariharan has sung for a Malayalam song album. One of the songs rendered by Hariharan is a ghazal in Pahadi Ragam. The second song by the noted singer has its music set in pure Kerala folk style. Noted singers P. Jayachandran, M.G.Sreekumar, M. Jayachandran, G. Venugopal and Sujatha have lent their voices for Sanal’s latest album.
Sanal, an alumnus of Mar Ivanious and Government Law Colleges, practiced law for four years before entering the Kerala Police Service as a Sub Inspector in 1988. He learned Carnatic music till the age of 15 but could not continue his formal training. He is still an avid music listener.
Sanal said he used to write Malayalam poetry from his college days onwards. He took to penning lyrics after being inspired by the songs written by O.N.V. Kurup for the film, “Ulkadal”. Music director K. P. Udayabhanu was also a source of inspiration.
Sanal says he sets his lyrics to music first by singing his own lines. The songs are recorded and later sung by professional singers. In 2002, the Kerala State Film Critics association adjudged Sanal the best music director of the year. This is the third music album to be brought out by Sanal.
