Aamir Khan promises that there will be no lobbying for RDB at the Oscars, they'll either win on merit or not at all
After your Lagaan experience, how does it feel to be part of a film that is the Indian entry to the Oscars again?
I feel proud, not only as an actor but also as an Indian because a film like Rang De Basanti will be representing India on an international forum.
Did the committee have a tough time selecting the Indian entry for the Oscars this year, compared to last year?
Yes. It has been difficult for the committee since we had some very good films. I have seen Lage Raho Munnabhai and I think it is as good as RDB. I am as proud of Munnabhai as I am proud of RDB. These films represent the country, which is a positive sign for the future.
What do you think should be the plan of action for RDB now?
I firmly believe that there is nothing more important than your film. I think Rakyesh Mehra and Ronnie Screwvala should now try and show the film to as many members as possible and arrange for multiple screenings. I want the film to win on its own merit, not through lobbying. This is a tough category as the best films of several countries compete here. I remember there were 52 films which had come for the final nomination when we had taken Lagaan, four years ago. The members loved Lagaan and that's why we were nominated. I think getting the film nominated in the top five is 95 per cent of the job done.
How will your past experience at the Oscar help this time?
The one thing that will work in our favour is that the film is very good. The second thing is that most of the jury members are aware of me as Aamir Khan They would remember me from four years ago as part of Lagaan, a film they loved immensely and had even nominated. So I guess they would readily come to watch the film.
Is there a lot of lobbying to be done while there?
Not at all. If you ask me whether I lobbied during Lagaan, the answer is 'no'. If you call any member personally and convince him/her to vote for you, it means that you already believe that you will be disqualified. I want my film to win on its own merit. Winning through backdoor methods holds no value.
This year you have a competitor in Water from Canada…
It makes no difference. The jury members treat them all as non-English films. Just like you will not understand a Tamil or a Telegu film, they do not understand the language of any film in the foreign film category. They simply go by subtitles and then decide.
How important is the Oscar award for you?
For me the most important thing is my audience and being loved by them. This is followed by international audiences and these ceremonies. Our film being appreciated or winning awards at Golden Globe Awards, Bafta or the Oscar is like crossing new boundaries and exploring new audiences. But what really matters is representing our country with respect and dignity.
Indian actors like Kamal Hassan and Amitabh Bachchan have expressed their displeasure over the Oscars.
If they do not believe in it, that's their point of view. I can only speak for myself. Every man has a right to his own opinion.
