What does an eight-year-old know of borders? Ramchand learns the hard way when he accidentally strays across the Indo-Pak border and alongwith his father is put in jail, after being labeled as spies.

"I read the papers and all that but I never thought I would make a political film which is also a human interest story," said Mehreen Jabbar, director.

Based on a true story, Ramchand Pakistani, which premiered at the Tribeca film festival examines the repercussions of political relations between the two countries on the common man and more.

"It resonates all the conflicts that you find in many countries of the world--identities of faith, culture, nationality, class," said Jabbar.

Pakistan's first film to be based on the lives of its minority Hindu population, Ramchand Pakistani is a collaborative effort of Indian and Pakistani artistes.

The soundtrack composed by India's Debojyoti Mishra is a collaboration between Shubha Mudgal and Pakistan's Shafqat Amanat Ali.

Nandita Das plays the lead role of Ramchand's mother. "These accidental crossing of borders has been a problem with many of our neighbours and so I think it is a very poignant subject," said Nandita Das, actress

On the heels of the success of Pakistani films like Khuda Kay liye the producers hope to release Ramchand Pakistani in Indian screens later this year.
