Internationally acclaimed actress Nandita Das is working for a Telugu film for the first time. She is playing lead role in award winning director K N T Shasthry’s new film, Kamlee. The film was launched today (June 9, 2006). Clad in wheat colored cotton sari, Nandita Das came to the launch event and met the press.
The film is produced by B C Haricharan Prasad of USA and P V Sukanya. While Nandita plays the lead role, Shafi plays her husband. Tanikella Bharani and others also play important roles.

Nandita Das explained to the media how did she accept a Telugu film. “I don’t do commercial films. But if someone approaches me with a meaningful script I don’t mind the language. K N T Shasthry came up with this script about the plight of the rural children in Andhra Pradesh. Some stories like this might be rooted in local but they have universal resonance. That’s why I accepted this film,” she reasoned.
“Shasthry had also shown me a documentary that he made on the similar subject which helped me to understand the subject more. I don’t know how many people end up watching this but such stories should be told. Normally, my films are not viewed by large public of audience but that is the situation in India, we can’t help it,” she said.
Kamlee is about a child: Shasthry
“Nandita is playing mother to a girl child. The film is about what is happening to girl children in Andhra Pradesh. It is too early to reveal the story but we have begun shooting from today,” director Shasthry informed the media.
