If “ Ram Gopal Varma ka Sholay’ doesn’t work, I will open a restaurant and call it Ram Gopal Varma ke Choley! I guess it’s better than reading some silly column that’s more tumour than humour!..HOW DOES THIS SOUND?
So high are the expectations with this one..
Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay has had to deal with several controversies, firstly everybody’s negative reaction to him wanting to recreate a classic like Sholay and secondly the original makers, the Sippys legal lawsuit on him. Nonetheless Varma has braved all this and is still keen to make his own version of Sholay.
Of course Varma has had to change several things from the original, like the names of his characters, settings and even the premise of the story, but all this has not deterred him.
The villainious role of Gabbar Singh will be essayed by Amitabh Bachchan, who played the role of Jai in the original. Ajay Devgan will play Veeru and Sushant Singh will play Sambha’s character. South Indian actor Mohanlal has been roped in to play the role of Thakur Baldev Singh played by Sanjeev Kumar in the original. Jai’s character will be played by newcomer Prashant Raj Sachdev. Sushmita Sen will play Radha and Nisha Kothari will play the role of Basanti.
The movie begins with a train pulling into C.S.T. station and two young men stepping off it. It's their very first visit to Mumbai city.
Virendra Chavan (Ajay Devgan) and Jai Ranade (Prashant Raj Sachdev) grew up in Latur together. The two of them were like brothers and both wanted to be rich and successful quickly. Veeru was the older of the two and was like a teacher to young Jai, he was also fiercely protective about Jai. The pair's loyalty to one another is an absolute bond.
Within a week of their arrival on the recommendation of an old acquaintance of theirs called Soorma (Rajpal Yadav) who runs a dance bar, they found work with Shambhul Seth, a criminal with heavy underworld connections and also high on the police scanner.
In his pursuit of Shambhul, the Inspector Ranveer (Mohanlal) came into contact with Veeru and Jai. On meeting them, he realized that these were no hardened criminals. Small time hoodlums, perhaps, but deep inside their values were still intact. He chose to appeal to the honesty in them.
He exposed them to Shambhul's criminal past. Veeru and Jai were surprised by this. They agreed to help in whatever way they could. The inspector in the process of trying to get Shambhul got into a deadly trap and both Veeru and Jai in a show of extraordinary courage and strength managed to rescue him and managed to finish off Shambhul seth. But in the bargain, Veeru and Jai had to be arrested as well for associating with a criminal and for a while went to jail.
However Inspector Ranveer had some personal scores to settle with Gabbar Singh hence he could not use the help of the police and nor did he want to be associated with the underworld. Hence he decided to take the help of these two extremely able boys Veeru and Jai. A new episode would now begin in the lives of Veeru and Jai and a whole new chase and excitement would follow.
RGV’s Sholay is said to be the biggest remake in Hindi cinema…Need to say more
