Mirchi Movies, a subsidiary of Times Infotainment, plans to foray into the southern film market and has lined up several movie projects. Most Bollywood production houses are making a beeline for Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies.

The production house’s initial projects would be targeted at the Tamil and Malayalam film buffs. It has lined up an interesting mixed bag of comedy, romance and drama which includes Manjadikuru (Malayalam) and Vellithera, a Tamil comedy movie.

The company has also got the remake rights for one of the top grossers of Malayalam cinema in recent times — Chocolate, which it plans to remake in Tamil and Hindi. The third Tamil project would be a romantic comedy, Kadhal to Kalyanam

Mirchi Movies COO Munish Purii said, “We are looking at investing 50% of our corpus in making southern language movies which include buying rights of blockbuster films in case of the movie Chocolate.” In September last year, the company had announced that it has earmarked a substantial corpus for its foray in the film production business. He added that the company also plans to invest in existing projects or new talents.

“For us, the southern market is as important as the Hindi film market. We plan to be one of the aggressive players in the south. We have got a complete new talent pool for southern movies and have also set up back offices,” said Mr Purii.

As far as its plans for Bollywood are concerned, Mirchi Movies has inked deals with Satish Kaushik as well as Anupam Kher’s Karol Bagh Films and is in talks with other major players. Satish Kaushik will direct the first film for Mirchi Movies, as of now called Mujhe Zinda Karo, which is based on a real life incident. Mirchi Movies had earlier marketed Homi Adajania’s niche film Being Cyrus, which had garnered appreciation at the Box Office.
