Mira Nair’s much-acclaimed film, The Namesake has been completely ignored in the shortlist of Oscar nominations. The NRI filmmaker is not surprised at the omission but is definitely disappointed.
According to Mira, Hollywood acquires amnesia when it comes to the talent of colour. But it was mixed news for the other Indian filmmaker, Shekhar Kapoor. On the very day that his Australian friend Heath Ledger passed away, came the announcement that his leading lady, Cate Blanchett from Elizabeth—The Golden Age has been nominated for the Oscar for the Best Actress. But he too is very disappointed over the Oscar snub for The Namesake.
He said that it was a great film and many of his friends in Hollywood were very moved by the film and its performances. Before the nominations were announced, speculation was rife that actress Tabu may receive a nomination in the Best Actress category. While both Tabu and Irrfan Khan’s performances have received raving reviews in the States, somehow it could not translate into an Oscar nomination.
