Despite the rapid strides made in IT and other fields, the country has an alarmingly high maternal mortality rate. According to a Unicef report, one woman in India dies every seven minutes due to pregnancy related complications.
The figures could be higher as many cases in the rural areas unreported. What is alarming is that the figures are higher than those of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
