Kuselan, the Rajinikanth starrer released on August 1 has not whipped up the frenzy that his last release Sivaji -The Boss in Mumbai. With Sivaji , Mumbai theatres ran houseful shows for nearly two weeks, with advance bookings. The same is not true of Kuselan, the Tamil version and Kathanayukudu, the Telugu version which released simultaneously this Friday. One reason for the poor bookings for this family entertainer could be that Pasupathy is playing the lead in it, not Rajinikanth, who plays the superstar friend of a humble barber in it. Incidentally, the film is also being made in Hindi as Billo Barber by Shah Rukh Khan’s production house, Red Chillies Entertainment with Irrfan Khan playing the lead role. Contrary to reports, Billo Barber, which was supposed to release simultaneously with Kuselan is now releasing only on October 24. Pyramid Saimira will be releasing Rajinikanth’s film, Kuselan, directed by P. Vasu.

The company will release the film across 900 screens in India, the UAE, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Europe, Canada, China, and the US. They are distributing the prints of the film in multiplexes like Adlabs, Cinemax, Fame, PVR and Inox. Single screen theatres like Aurora in Matunga and Meghraj and Tilak, which pre-dominantly cater to the South Indian crowd, are being considered. Pyramid Saimira distributes around 100 films a year, but every year there are one or two films that go on to be top grossers. “This is easily the most-awaited film of the year and like Sivaji, may become Indian film’s highest grosser this year,” asserts P.S Saminathan, Manager, Pyramid Saimira.

The advance booking for Kuselan started from Wednesday and so far the response has been lukewarm .At Inox, a multiplex at Nariman Point the bookings have been poor. There are two shows daily from Friday. However, the ticket prices are comparitively high. The aftrnoon show has tickets priced at Rs 280, 260 and 240 while the evening shows are still costlier priced at Rs 320, 300 and 280.

At Fame Adlabs in Andheri, all the three daily shows have registered a poor collection. At Aurora 4 shows every day. The tickets are also reasonably priced at Rs 80, 90 and 100. There is also no advance booking at Aurora until August 1. A source from Aurora says, “ The ticket sales over the weekend have been comparitively better than the opening day. Besides the evening and the night show, the theatre was empty. Tickets were easily available and we hardly had any advance booking or Sunday except for the evening shows. The fact that Sivaji saw Rajini as the main hero of the film made a lot of difference. In Kuselan he is a supporting actor and that is taking a heavy toll on the tickets.”

But Pyramid Saimira is confident of Kuselan doing well. “The fact that Rajinikanth plays a life-like character is bound to have a universal appeal as this role will give his fans insights into the real superstar. The audiences also look forward to his movies, because they know that the superstar’s movies will have a message on life,” surmises P.S Saminathan. Also for the first time in the history of Tamil cinema, a vinyl cut-out of superstar Rajinikanth is going to be displayed outside US theatres screening Kuselan.
