She will obviously have to tame her anglicised accent to play the part of a village belle
Filmmakers have always been fascinated with Bankim Chandra's classic Devi Choudharani. In the past, Satyajit Ray had wanted to make this film with Suchitra Sen, but couldn't do so. Later, director Dinen Gupta made the film on the same novel with Sen. In Bollywood, Gulzar had expressed his desire to make the film with Hema Malini, but somehow his dream did not materialise.
And now, even before Pradeep Sarkar could commence work on his film Devi Choudharani based on the same novel with Vidya Balan, director Rituparno Ghosh has decided to go ahead with the same film. Ghosh's film will however star Katrina Kaif as Devi Choudharani.
Ghosh will start his film early next year and the major part of the film will be shot in Bangladesh. Apparently, Ghosh has approached Nana Patekar to play the role of Bhawani Pathak. When contacted, Katrina confirmed the news and said, “Yes, I'm doing Devi Choudharani with Rituparno Ghosh. The film should go on the floor early next year and it will be made in Hindi. Rituji has explained the character that I have to play in detail to me. It's a dynamic character and it will be my first woman-oriented film.” she said. Katrina will have to learn sword fighting and horse riding for the role.
According to our sources, “This will be one of Ritu's mega-budget films with plans of plans of shooting the entire film in Bangladesh, with some scenes in India. He intends to make certain changes in the script and will do extensive research on the period.”
The last time Bollywood adopted a Bankim Chandra classic was with Anandamath, way back in 1950s.
