He is the master of comedy and there is no doubt about it. However, filmmaker Priyadarshan is now delving into new territory.

“It is a film which I have done from my heart unlike the previous ones which I have done from my mind,” answers Priyan over phone from Mumbai.

We are talking about his forthcoming film Kanjivaram, which is set in the 1930s and “which deals with the first Communist movement in the country".

"It explores how it emerged and also the reason for its failure”.

Priyan goes back to the struggle of the silk weavers in Kanjivaram in Tamil Nadu .

“I want to prove that I can also be different and that’s why this film,” says Priyan.

On completion it will be sent to various film festivals and only after that will it be released, informs the director.

The 95-minute film stars south Indian actor Prakash Raj and the rest of the actors are all selected from street plays. In Bollywood, Priyan has two releases coming up — Dhol (September 21) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa (October 12).

The common factor in both films is the suspense element, something that we usually don’t associate with comedy films. “Even in a comedy, you need to do that to keep the audience looking forward to the next scene,” is his answer.

If Dhol reminds him of his college days then Bhool… reminds him of his days as a student of psychology (Akshay plays a psychiatrist) and the film deals with “how, while treating a person's mind he becomes eccentric to a certain extent”.

Elaborating on Dhol, Priyan adds that the story has a serious angle but the situations are hilarious.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa will be a visual treat and it is the first film after I made Viraasat which has been shot keeping the visual treat in mind. Dhol depends a lot on performance,” says the director of hit films like Hera Pheri, Hungama and Hulchul amonsgt others.
