Deepa Mehta's ordeal has come to an end due to timely intervention by John Abraham
“John urged Ravi Chopra who's directing him in Baabul, to watch Water. To my delight Mr Chopra loved the film and has agreed to market it in India,” says Mehta.
With the film already cleared by the Censor board with a 'U' certificate Water is being readied for a post- Diwali release.
“Water isn't a typical entertainer and needs to be marketed accordingly. I'm leaving that to the Chopras. I'm a big fan of Ravi's father B.R.Chopra who made films like Sadhana and Dharmputra, two reformist movies in the 1950s. In a way Water is perfectly in-sync with the Chopras socially conscious cinema,” says Deepa who's currently in India finalising details of her next project the historical epic Exclusion for which the director hopes to cast Amitabh Bachchan in the central role.
“As far as I'm concerned he's my first and last choice for the protagonist's role. John has already been signed for a key role. So is the British actor Terence Stamp,” says Deepa The film will chronicle the voyage of the ship called Komagata Maru, from India to Canada, a century ago, carrying indentured labourers from Punjab to Canada.
Meanwhile, Deepa's Punjabi comedy Heaven On Earth has been put on hold. “The Punjabi comedy will happen at a later date. You really can't take the Punju out of the NRI,” says Deepa
