The big fight is on. Four big releases, four mega banners, four pairs of superstars… and all fighting for the same eyeballs.
Filmmaking evidently doesn't begin and end with creativity. It begins with creativity but ends with masterminding strategies. So strategy is top of the agenda now for Aditya Chopra (Dhoom 2), Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani (Don), J P Dutta (Umrao Jaan) and Shrirish Kunder (Jaaneman).
In other words, the race is on between Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, this Diwali They all want to go alone. So Yash-Raj Films postponed the release of Dhoom 2 by a month (October 20 to November 24) to avoid a clash with Don As of now, Don will be released along with Umrao Jaan and Jaaneman in Diwali and Dhoom will release on Eid. However, things seem to be changing every day.
Not that the filmmakers admit to being caught strategising. “Aditya Chopra wants some more time for the post-production of Dhoom 2. He wants to incorporate some special effects and work on the action sequences. That's why the film has been postponed to November 24, not to avoid a clash with Don ,” says an official source of Yash-Raj Films.
This postponement will directly benefit Jaaneman for the film can now use the entire chain of theatres that had been booked for Dhoom 2. “I completed my film just a few days ago and am ready to release it on October 20. I have spoken to Yash Raj Films about this,” says Sajid Nadiadwala, producer of Jaaneman. “Dhoom 2 is being released on November 24 which means my film will get all theatres of Dhoom 2. I am planning to release about 1000 prints. The postponing of Dhoom 2 has helped me."
Meanwhile, J P Dutta is unperturbed by the competition for Umrao Jaan. “As a filmmaker, I believe in releasing my film when it is ready. The prospect of other films releasing at the same time as mine has never troubled me,” says Dutta. “I don't think several films releasing on the same date matters these days. There are more films and theatres, with an adequate audience for each film.”
Sidhwani, producer of Don claims to be equally nonchalant about the clash of these releases. “I have heard of the Dhoom 2 postponement, but there was never a clash between the two films. Shah Rukh, Abhishek and Hrithik are all big stars. So there never was a question of a clash,” he says.
Sidhwani is however unaware of the other two releases. “We have to just wait and see what happens. A good film will work, irrespective of other films releasing with it. We will devise our marketing strategy, let others work out theirs.”
