Rajya Sabha member and actress Jaya Bachchan will figure in an ad campaign against polio that will especially target Uttar Pradesh where 413 children have been afflicted with the crippling disease so far this year.
A total of 490 polio cases have surfaced in the country since January this year, with the maximum number of cases being reported from Uttar Pradesh.
"She has agreed to be a part of the pulse polio campaign in the state," Arun Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary, Medical and Health in UP, said over phone.
Mishra said Bachchan's campaign against polio is not scheduled before the November 12 pulse polio round.
"The ad campaign will start after the polio round. Initially, she will do commercials for television and radio. Later on if she has time, she will also visit areas which are the most affected like Moradabad and J P Nagar and encourgae parents to vaccinate their children against polio," Mishra said.
In Uttar Pradesh, where the virus was restricted to four districts, now has spread to 45 other areas.
While the Samajwadi Party MP's commercials will be restricted to UP, her husband and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, who is also UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for polio eradication and HIV/AIDS, is already coaxing parents on television across the nation to not to miss the polio vaccination.
Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar have been part of the pulse polio promotional programmes.
