Mahesh Bhatt is known for his straight forward attitude, and is one of the gifted filmmakers of Bollywood who never hesitated to deal with bold topics. Bhatt speaks to Indiatimes Movies about his recently released film Showbiz .

Tushar makes his debut in Showbiz . Has his assistant director stint helped him as an actor?
Acting is completely different from filmmaking. No matter how good a director you are, you can't claim that you understand even the ABC of acting. I am a very bad actor but good with actors when I am directing. If you ask if Tushar's experience as an assistant helped him, the answer is no.

Most of your films have newcomers. Isn't it risky to take a chance every time?
I'm what I am today and where I am only because of the risks I've taken. When I started my career 35 years ago, and made my first film, that time too I took a risk. My experience says that whenever I've tried something new or bold, the audience has always accepted me. We make four to five films a year, let's see what's in store for Showbiz.

You are repeating Mrinalini Sharma in your film this time.
She's a very pretty face.

Your film deals with the media and celebs. You're averse to the media barging into a celebrity's private life. But there are some Bollywood celebs, who publicize their affairs just to be in the limelight.
I have no problem with the media getting into my bedroom and seeing everything that I do. But people once called me an exhibitionist because of the type of media coverage I get. I personally again have no problem with that, but the media's claims of being pure is questionable. The pressure on media houses to produce numbers is tremendous and in that race they cross prescribed laws of our society, which in turn they themselves preach to others.

But contradictions and hypocrisies happen on the other side of the fence too.
Yes it does but that doesn't mean that I am choosing to tell one side of the story which has not been told. So far every ail of the society was penalized by the media. Solutions came with media coming into picture. But now when the media is getting into picture, the problems are getting aggravated instead of being solved.

What's the thought behind Showbiz ?
I am choosing to say one side of the story. There are always multiple stories. In Showbiz , we are talking about a guy who goes through a realization that when you hide something, the media will bring it out to the public. When you want to become star, you take help of the media and when you become a star you try to hide the things, you were proud of at a point in time. If I would try to hide Raju khan's issue, I would get more questions about him. I understood this logic when I was 7 years old. People used to ask me about my father. My mother used to say that my father has gone for shooting, but I told them that my father stays with my step mother. People manipulate you from what you hide.

What went wrong between Raju khan and Mukesh bhatt?
It's a family quarrel. Mukesh and Raju don't get along. I tried my level best to solve the issue but I failed to do so.

Mukesh Bhatt said he never wanted Raju Khan to direct this movie. What made you to sign Raju Khan as a director?
Talent... I know Mukesh disagrees with that but I still swear by his talent. I see a lot of potential in Raju. Yes he did cross the budget. We believe in making films within a restricted budget. But we have given him the credit of director, as 99 percent of the film has been made by him, while the rest was done by Mohit and Vishal He has done the creative work and based on that he is the rightful author and it is his film.

Why has your production house stopped making films like Arth and Saransh ?
I've made more than 50 films like Arth, Saransh, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi etc. All my films were expressions of that time. Now the audience has changed, so we have to make films according to them. That time audiences enjoyed that kind of cinema, but today a Jism and Murder sells.
