Vivek may star in Shootout at Parliament, based on the Dec 13 attack and the buzz is that he would be playing Mohammad Afzal. Well Vivek, how true is that?
Vivek Oberoi is no longer the angry man who had once called one of the most infamous press conferences in the industry. “Our film industry is Mayanagri. It tends to distract you from your focus,” says the 31-year-old, with a newfound enlightenment about the reel deal.
Oberoi, whose Omkara is being screened at Osian’s Cinefan, claims to be going through an “unlearning” process. One wouldn’t know if a particular heroine is the raison d’etre of the cynicism, but the hero is determined to start afresh-and with a bang.
Oberoi will be seen in Apoorva Lakhia’s Mission Istanbul, where he will share screen space with Abhishek Bachchan.
“Bobby Deol will also be starring in the movie,” he announces. As you quiz him on Bachchan, Oberoi reminds you that they had earlier done a movie, Yuva, and are professionals.
Though Oberoi chooses to be tight-lipped about the storyline, he lets on that it is an action extravaganza, “It is a total masala film and I’m very excited about it. I play a crazy, wacky hero.” By doing action films, isn’t he limiting himself? “I’ll do anything that’s exciting. I’m an adrenaline junkie,” he says.
He may also star in Shootout at Parliament, a film based on the December 13 attack, which will be a sequel to Lakhia’s Shootout at Lokhandwala. Oberoi is rumored to be playing Mohammad Afzal, who was sentenced to death three years ago but is still awaiting his fate after his family filed a mercy plea to the President.
Ask Oberoi to confirm and he grins and says, “I’m not at liberty to disclose anything.”
What he does disclose is that he was inspired by Vishal Bharadwaj during the shooting of Omkara. “ Vishal focuses only on the film at hand and he does it with passion,” says Oberoi, and adds that he has now decided to do one film at a time and doesn’t need four, five assignments to prove a point. “I want to go back to the time when I was a four-year-old. I used to participate in plays and I did it for the sheer pleasure of acting. I didn’t know anything about money or popularity then,” he says.
Oberoi, who has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, now does a U-turn and claims, “I prefer arc lights to limelight.”
