Remember Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai, where veteran actress Suhasini Mulay played a distressed mother who watched her son (Akshaye Khanna) fall for an older woman? It’s now time for Suhasini to change sides.
In Naseeruddin Shah’s debut film Yun Hota To Kya Hota, the distinguished-looking actress plays an older woman who becomes the object of adoration for a much younger man.
Ageless romance
With Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff giving their hearts away to girls one-third their age in Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd and Shashilal Nair’s Lolita, it looks like it’s the season for generation-challenged romances in Hindi films.
“Why not?” says Irrfan Khan, who has two releases lined up this Friday. “Hindi cinema is maturing and it’s wonderful to be part of a film like Yun Hota…. I play a man looking for a mother figure in his relationship. It’s definitely a departure from the way man-woman relationships are depicted in films these days.”
In the same breath, Irrfan admits he doesn’t have much to do in Yun Hota To Kya Hota. “It’s a role that has been drastically edited for the sake of continuity. So much so, that you’ll wonder why I’m there in the first place. But a character is never bigger than the larger picture. Naseer has made such a fine film. Everyone from Konkona to Boman has given a fine performance.”
How bizarre!
Irrfan plays a stockbroker in his 40s, who is completely besotted by an older woman.
“My character adores the woman to the point of worship. She’s very classy and I’m nothing but a diversion for her. She’d happily make love to another man if she found someone more interesting.
Suhasini and I share a very important lovemaking scene, a part of which has been edited in the final cut. The scene combines food and sex. I’m about to kiss her when she says she’s hungry.
We then go into this sensuous culinary mood, which ends with me putting two ice-cream cones on her knees… almost like boobs on the leg… It’s bizarre, yet fascinating. I’ve never done anything like this before,” confesses Irrfan, who started his career making violent love to Dimple Kapadia in Govind Nihalani’s Drishti.
A new beginning for Irrfan as the love machine? He laughs, “It’s always a pleasure to make love to leading ladies who are also great actresses, like Dimple, Tabu and Suhasini ”
