The dance, music and melodrama of Indian cinema is being celebrated in Madrid this week, with a weeklong festival showcasing the best of the world's most prolific film industry.

Madrid's Renoir and Palafox cinemas and the Spanish Film Institute are showing a feast of flicks in a programme presented by director Qazi Abdur Rahim, who told reporters on opening the Imagine India festival that it sought to unearth "alternative cinema for young people."

Six films have been entered in the official competition, and Omkara -- an Othello adaptation by director and composer Vishal Bharadwaj -- set the ball rolling Monday night.

The other five in contention for the top prize Golden Chakra include Dor , by Nagesh Kukunoor .

‘Dor’ wowed Indian fans with its tale of love and loss as well as hope and redemption between two women from vastly contrasting worlds.

Chitra Palekar, 59 and a veteran of Mumbai avant-garde theatre, was offering her "Maati Maay," about a female gravedigger with a baby son.

Also up for consideration is Gajendra Ahire's "Bayo", Anjan Das' "Faltu" and "Nottam" by Sashi Paravoor.

The select six will compete for honours of best film, best director, actor, actress and film-score.
