Would it not be a visual treat to see Hrithik Roshan or a Shahrukh Khan serenade Priyanka Chopra or Pretty Zinta on the hallowed portals of great walls of China? Or an action scene being picturised in all its razzmatazz with Chinese stunts thrown in, on the Great Wall of China. Tourists visiting China at the international level are much more than what come to India and as such a window to China needs to be opened for the Indian movie buffs.

On the eve of the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Mumbai, it could have been a fabulous opportunity for the film industry to enter into a tie-up with the Chinese film industry, but this is one opportunity that industry has let go. Some facts would bring into highlight the opportunity that has not been capitalized by the industry. ‘Mahabharata’ the popular epic that has been translated into Chinese has run out of its first edition and there is a great demand for its reprint. Indian works of historical importance are lapped up in China, and there is a full-fledged Hind Department functioning in Peking University. Inspite of that of the total trade of $17.6 billion that exists between India and China films do not form even a miniscule component.

While we are second only to Hollywood as far as production of films is concerned, so far Star Movies and HBO have not been given an exclusive slot to Bollywood on their platform as has been accorded to Chinese films, and the films being shown in these slots are not much to talk about when compared to the fare being dished out from Bollywood. Do we have a comparable figure as Bruce Lee as an international figure, or a John Woe as a Director at the international level. Do we have a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in our Portfolio, or other multitude of films, which are being shot by technicians of Chinese origin?

If the synergy of action and emotion, action being forte of China and emotion seems to be our forte, where to achieve just imagine what spin-offs can be achieved at the box-office and also the respect at the international level.

We can have our version of Oriental Express on the Lhasa Peking train, which is a marvel of its kind unparalleled any where in the world. It would get hands down success. Or a romance that blossoms between a girl from China and a boy from India. Shanghai is better than streets of Brooklyn in New York but we have not thought about shooting there.

At the drop of a hat we run over to London or New York and the picturisation of the landscapes of these cities have been flogged so much like a dead-horse that we know as the scene unfolds what to expect in the background. And the input costs that is loaded into the cost component once the shootings have to be done in Europe or in USA, would it not be brought down once the shootings take place in vast and multi hued landscape of China. Now that Hong Kong is also part of China why can we not shoot in Hong Kong as well? In terms of its novelty China is still a virgin territory for the Bollywood to explore it.

We have got historical similarities and historical exchanges and have evolved from History. After all, a religion, Buddhism founded in India, went on to establish itself as a religion in China. And now it being a religion which is becoming quite popular in Hollywood, with brand ambassadors like Richard Gere endorsing it, would it not be prudent for Chinese as well as Indian film industry to give a movie on Buddha to the world, as the sites associated with Buddha are either with China or India. Let the industry give it a thought.
