Yesterday's Prem Rog girl, Padmini Kolhapure is back on the scene.. in theatre.. interviewed by Sonil Dedhia.
Suddenly, you have become quite active in theatre.
Oh yes. I am working in Aasman Se Gire.. Khajoor Pe Atke.. with my brother-in-law Shakti Kapoor. I'm also doing two films: Daughter Ek Pyaara sa Ehsaas and Mumbai Amchee.
Isn't this the right time to make a comeback?
Absolutely. I had quit films because I wanted to be there for my family. The frantic pace was taking a toll on my health. Plus, I got married when I was very young, suddenly I had to fulfill the duties of a house maker.
But I'm looking at offers right now.. my son has grown up.. I've fulfilled all my responsibilities. (Laughs) I'm so bored sitting at home, I don't want to be door mat any more..
You were at the peak of stardom when you quit.
I didn't give that aspect much thought. It's better to quit than to be thrown out.
Gautami Kapoor pipped you to the role of Tulsi in Kyunki Saab Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Any hard feelings?
Not at all. I didn't lose out on the role really. I was in touch with the Balaji guys. I was keen because I hadn't acted in a TV serial before. But the next I heard was the official announcement that Gautami had been cast as Tulsi. I'm okay with that.
Will you take up another TV offer?
Why not? But TV is a demanding medium. The working hours are stricter than in films.
Does the unsavoury image of your brother-in-law bother the family?
Listen, with so much media attention on actors these days, it doesn't take time to make up stories about liaisons and affairs.
Everyone is being linked even if an actor puts his arm around an actress' shoulder, it becomes news. Tongues wag instantly that they're having an affair. I was linked with everyone.. including Raj Kapoorji and Nasir Hussain saab. What about Shakti Kapoor's expose in a TV sting operation? We knew Shakti was being wrongly implicated in the casting couch stuff before the expose went on air, the family was prepared for it.
Are you getting into film production?
No no.. if you're referring to Padmini Telefilms, it's just registered in my name.
Trade talk is that your husband (producer Tutu Sharma) is in a financial mess.
There are no such problems. Tutu wants to release Paanch it was stuck at the Censors.. since then, things have been going haywire.
Your 1980s film, Insaaf ka Tarazu, was a disturbing depiction of a victim of rape. Why didn't you do more such socially relevant films?
I would have.. but I wasn't offered such a film. Insaaf looked at the trauma of a rape victim sensitively. There was no titillation. But after its release, I was really hurt by the derogatory comments on my role.
Are Indian audiences mature today?
I don't think so.. kissing scenes are still a strict no-no.
How do you look back at the kiss controversy involving Prince Charles and you?
What controversy? It was just a peck on the cheek.. the media took it somewhere else. It was no big deal.
Who do you think is today's Raj Kapoor.. a sort of a showman?
Sanjay Leela Bhansali. No doubt about that.
