Aankhen sequel will be directed by Sachin; will not have Akshay Kumar , Arjun Rampal and Sushmita Sen though.
In an extended season of sequels, (sequels to Mr India and No Entry in the offing) it is now the 2002-hit Aankhen that joins the marquee.
However, it will have its share of changes. For one, Vipul Shah will not direct the film, Sachin Pilgaonkar will do so. From the cast of the first film, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Sushmita Sen are not expected to do the film either.
The film is being made by producer Gaurang Doshi who has been lying low after his Deewar: Let's Bring The Heroes Home bombed. Now he plans to return with two projects.
“ One is a sentimental romantic comedy called Happy Birthday to be directed by Sriram Raghavan (Ek Hasina Thi) and stars John Abraham ,” says Doshi.
The other is the Aankhen sequel. “If you recollect Aankhen had not just one open ending, but two, one for the Indian market and the other for the overseas audience. My script writers and I can take the story forward from either of the two endings. We've already started working on it,” says Doshi.
The problem is that Doshi had a massive fall-out with director Vipul Shah during the making of the first Aankhen.
“No problem,” says Doshi. “Who said anyone is indispensable? I've got (actor-director) Sachin Pilgaonkar to direct the sequel. Why Sachin? Well, I've seen his work in Marathi films, his films are outstanding. Sachin had some unfortunate experiences as a Hindi film director ( Prem Deewane with Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit and Pooja Bhatt for Subhash Ghai), but I've persuaded him into doing a Hindi film again. Sachin is very excited about doing the Aankhen sequel and directing Mr Bachchan.”
Of the original cast Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal have already been sounded out. But Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Sushmita Sen are not expected to be in the sequel. All three actors had differences with Doshi during the making of the film.
Akshay and Doshi had a massive showdown when the producer refused to arrange bulk passes for Akshay's family for the pre-release screening of Aankhen. They also had problems revolving around monetary issues. Arjun felt he had got a raw deal when his only romantic song with Sushmita was edited out, and Sushmita openly supported Arjun.
Doshi on his part has decided to move on. “No one is indispensable. If Akshay Kumar and Vipul Shah are working together, I am glad. They deserve each other. I'm too small a producer to work with such great artistes. I've no choice but to replace them,” says Doshi.
He will be signing two big stars in place of Akshay and Arjun. “While the first Aankhen was based on a play, the sequel will be entirely original. Of course, the protagonists will be blind,” says Doshi.
All about aankhen:
The Vipul Shah directed Aankhen (2002) is about a schizophrenic bank employee, Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), who loses his job after assaulting a cashier whom he witnesses cheat a longtime customer. He decides to avenge this insult by robbing the bank he had dedicated his life to. Vijay blackmails teacher Neha (Sushmita Sen) to train three blind accomplices for the task - Vishwas (Akshay Kumar), Arjun (Arjun Rampal), and Ilias (Paresh Rawal). The robbery proves to be an extremely difficult task, the aftermath poses a greater danger for the criminals as a series of double-crossers find their shaky alliance crumbling.
