The frenetic IIFA Weekend had a variety of moods. The morning started with Leeds University conferring doctorates on Shabana Azmi, Yash Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan, with Shweta Abhishek and Aishwarya.
The afternoon was fun filled with Salman Khan in a great mood at the music launch of his film ‘Marigold’ followed by the lavish awards ceremony at Sheffield.
The venue was packed to the gills with thousands of Bollwood-crazy people rooting for every star that they caught sight of. In spite of some breathtaking performances (especially by Shilpa Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan) the four-hour long function faltered at points, due to a few uninspiring performances and lack lustre compering by Lara Dutta and Boman Irani.
The highlight of the show was when Dharmendra was given the Lifetime Award by Amitabh. “I was a small town boy in Phagwara and I used to look at this magical world of cinema and wonder if I would ever be a part of it. From those days to this stage, it has been a very eventful journey,” Dharamendra said. After his emotional speech he called both his sons, Sunny and Bobby on the stage and then all three Deols cried together, as Bobby mumbled, “My papa’s the best!”. A touching moment, and it left a section of the audience teary eyed.
