The 37th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), beginning today (November 23) in Goa, will screen over 200 films from all over the world as well as provide a platform for film-related business at two picturesque venues on the banks of river Mandovi.
Termed as 'India's Cannes', the ten-day festival will also have 240 hours of fun and entertainment, including discussions by film makers on the business aspects of films at 'Film Bazaar', besides a host of activities, open for general public, at different beaches.
Popular actor of yesteryears, Shashi Kapoor will be the chief guest for this evening's inaugural ceremony. Other prominent personalities to be present on the occasion, include Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Das Munshi and Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane.
The inaugural ceremony will be followed by a star-studded cultural extravaganza by Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Diya Mirza, Malaika Arora Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Esha Deol along with Prabhu Deva , Bappi Lahiri, Manoj Tiwari, Harbhajan Maan, Sachin and Surpriya.
The opening film - Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" – will be screened post-inaugural session at Kala Academy's auditorium. In addition to this, Indian Navy's 'Sagar Pawan' will perform an aerobics display over Mandovi river.
In keeping with Goa's image of being a fun destination, a special carnival-styled float parade is planned for tomorrow before the inauguration, which would traverse through the city streets before culminating at its outskirts.
Golden Peacock award of Rs 10,00,000 will be given for the best film and the Silver Peacock award of Rs 5,00,000 to the most promising director. A Special Jury Award would be given to a Director for his individual artistic contribution.
The jury for the Peacocks comprise eminent internationally acclaimed film personalities - Rolf De Heer (Chairman), an award winning director from Australia, Vincent Maraval, Producer, Co-Founder of Wild Bunch, France, Olivier Assayas, award winning director from France and Jahnu Barua, award winning Director from Assam, as members.
This year the festival will feature a special retrospective of Prithviraj Kapoor's films, and a special screening of Richard Attenborough's ‘Gandhi' will also be held to mark the centenary year of `Satyagraha' movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
The festival will close with the film ‘Babel', featuring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
