Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker sparked high praise and high emotion at the premiere of "The Dark Knight" at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square.

Co-star Michael Caine - who has two Academy Awards - predicted an Oscar for Ledger, telling the Daily News, "If he were alive, this would have blown him into the stratosphere."

Critics are echoing the sentiment.

London's Sun newspaper called Ledger's performance "fuller" than Jack Nicholson's and "deserv[ing] all the talk of a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination."

"Ledger had a maniacal gusto inspired enough to suggest that he might have lived to be as audacious an actor as Marlon Brando," said Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly, while the Hollywood Reporter likened the film's buzz to Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed."

On the carpet at Monday's premiere, black in honor of Ledger, the fallen actor's co-stars poured on the praise. "He's the best thing about the film," said Christian Bale, who plays Batman. "He steals the movie."

Ledger's father, Kim, gave the movie a thumb's up. "It's very good," he said.
