Eight years after the incident, a local court on Monday framed charges afresh against Bollywood star Salman Khan for hunting two endangered black bucks in Kankani village and against five others including actor Saif Ali Khan for abetting him in the crime.
The charges were framed against Salman under Section 51 (hunting) of the Wildlife Protection Act and against filmstars Saif Ali Khan, Tabu , Sonali Bendre, Neelam and local resident Dushyant Singh under Section 52 (abetment) of the Act.
Charges under the Indian Penal Code have been dropped.
All the accused appeared before Judicial Magistrate Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit, hearing a revision petition against framing of charges in the Kankani village case.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges following which the magistrate fixed July 3 and 4 for commencement of trial.
An additional sessions judge directed the reframing of charges after discharging Salman under section 148 of the Indian Penal Code (rioting armed with a deadly weapon) and section 27 of the Arms Act (possession of arms with intent for unlawful purpose).
The others were discharged under sections 147 (rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.
The case pertains to killing of two black bucks in Kankani village on the night of October 1, 1998, while the film crew was shooting for the Rajshree Productions 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.
Another case against Salman pertaining for possession of arms was adjourned till June 21 while the two appeals against his convictions in the Bhavad village and Ghoda farms case was deferred to August 21.
The District Judge Sessions Judge G S Surana adjourned the hearing as records of both the appeals have been summoned by the Rajasthan High Court and the Rajasthan government has filed a separate appeal contesting the acquittal of the others in the cases.
In the Arms Act case, an application was moved by the prosecution for taking 25 documents on record which was opposed by Salman's counsel Hastimal Saraswat.
Saraswat argued it was an 8-year-old case and there was no logic of placing new documents on record at this stage.
The case pertains to the killing of two black bucks in Kankani village of the district on the night of October 1, 1998, while the film crew was shooting for the Rajshree Productions 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.
The Bollywood star was on February 17 sentenced by Chief Judicial Magistrate B K Jain to a year in prison for killing a chinkara (species of gazelle) in Bhavad village in September 1998.
The judge handed Salman a five-year jail term on April 10 for hunting a black buck in Ghoda farms. In this case the Bollywood actor had to spend three nights in a Jodhpur jail before being released on bail.
