There was chaos Tuesday outside the special court handing out sentences in the 1993 serial blasts here with police detaining at least 20 people as they tried to protest 'unfair treatment' just before actor Sanjay Dutt was to surrender.
Most of the people detained were burqa clad women relatives of those convicted for their role in the serial blasts on March 12, 1993, in which at least 257 people were killed. They had gathered outside the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Preventive) Acts (TADA) court stating that their kin had been unfairly treated.
Sanjay, who has been convicted for the possession of illegal arms but absolved of the terror conspiracy, is on his fourth reprieve since. His bail extension lapses Tuesday.
Sanjay's co-accused, now convicted in the bombing case and who had been very supportive to him during his 14 years of trial, feel the actor has gotten away easy because of his 'political connections and stardom'.
'When our relatives have been asked to surrender, how can Sanjay get away so easily for the same offence?' asked a close associate of one of the convicts. Sanjay was arrested in April 1993, a month after the blasts rocked Mumbai. The actor has spent nearly 16 months in jail in two stretches since then.
