The gist of his comments was that middle class Indians were consuming a lot of food and this in turn was not only leading to food shortages in the world but was also contributing to the rise in prices of all commodities.
But the facts are quite to the contrary. According to statistics –

The total food grain consumption by a US citizen is five times that of an Indian citizen. The US is also the leading country in the consumption of meat and dairy products in the world.
The wastage of food and food and food products is also very high in the United States. According to a report by the United states Agricultural Department (USDA), as much as 20 percent of the food goes waste. It is valued at more than $31 billion. But some independent studies have put this figure at $50 billion and more.
In simple terms, it means that as many as 49 million people can be fed each year with the amount of food resources that are lost every year in the United States alone.
