Praised for trying to get her erratic life back together, drama mama Britney Spears got a judge's okay today to spend more time with her two baby boys.

Ex-hubby Kevin Federline will keep full custody of Sean Preston, 2-1/2, and Jayden James , 20 months but the ruling was the first bit of good legal news for Brit after her very public downward spiral.

"We are so pleased with Britney's progress and we are very appreciative of the court's recognition of this progress," her parents said in a statement.

Even Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan had something nice to say: The longer visits are "recognition of progress that has been made," he said.

"It's a cautious step but a step nonetheless," he added.

Spears, 26, had lost all visitation rights after a standoff with cops and K-Fed over the boys landed her in a psycho ward in January.

Federline eventually let her see the tykes periodically under supervision. Kaplan would only say that today's judge's order gives "some graduated expansion in time" for Britney.

"Obviously it's something that is more than it has been," he said.

The celebrity web site TMZ.com reported Spears will get three days supervised visitation a week and be with them this Sunday - Mother's Day.

Spears left the courtroom this afternoon with a smile on her face, but earlier she appeared glum and held her mom's hand.

Reporters were tossed from the courtroom as the judge reviewed an exhaustive custody evaluation that is believed to detail her troubled behavior, her refusal to submit to drug tests, and how she interacts with the children.

It also is believed to have documented the progress Spears has made since her parents took control of her affairs - personal and financial - three months ago.

Her father, Jamie Spears, is conservator of Spears finances - she can make no money moves without his okay.

Brit arrived in court this morning wearing a demure brown and cream checked dress, swingy cream cardigan, peep-toed brown heels, a spacey blank stare and her long, straight blonde TV hair.

She kept her hands folded in front and was guided by superlawyer Blair Berk to a seat in the back corner of the courtroom - as far from K-Fed as possible.

The judge then called the group to the front, and K-Fed looked and smiled in the direction of Britney's dad Jamie, her conservator.

Britney kept looking straight ahead, stonefaced, her hands still clasped in front and Berk's hand reassuringly on her back.

The judge asked everyone to raise their right hand and swear to tell the truth.

He later asked the pop star to state her name.

"Britney," she said with a soft voice.

"Your full name," the judge, Commissioner Scott Gordon, admonished.

"Britney Spears," she replied.

Spears, 26, first lost her 50-50 custody share Oct. 1 after a judge labeled her a "habitual" user of drugs and alcohol and the singer failed to clean up her act.

The judge then yanked her monitored visitation rights twice:

First, on Oct. 17 after Spears allegedly ignored her court-ordered drug tests.

Second, on Jan. 4 after paramedics strapped her to a gurney and delivered her to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's psych ward because she refused to hand her sons over to Federline.
