India's powerful movie industry is throwing its weight behind action hero Sanjay Dutt, currently facing a lengthy prison sentence for illegal arms possession, by launching a campaign to highlight the actor's soft side, news reports said Wednesday.
Dharmesh Tiwari, general secretary of the Cine & Television Artistes' Association, told the Hindustan Times that a signature campaign starting Dec. 12 was intended to "show the world what a genuine and helpful person" Dutt is. It had nothing to do with Dutt's recent conviction, he said.
Last week, a trial court convicted Dutt of illegally keeping three assault rifles and a pistol, but acquitted him of a more serious conspiracy charge in connection with the March 12, 1993, Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people.
Currently out on bail, Dutt faces five to 10 years in prison. He is likely to be sentenced early next year.
Actor Sunil Shetty told The Times of India newspaper that the past 13 years had been "like a prison sentence without bars" for Dutt.
Dutt has already served 18 months in jail after he was originally arrested and charged in 1993. Half of his 105 movies were made after his release on bail in 1995.
Shetty said Dutt was a generous human being, who had paid for the operations of Bollywood workers and financially supported many families, charitable work that the movie industry aims to publicize.
