This movie has an interesting script which is guaranteed to hold the interest of the viewer. Originally, this movie was made in Malayalam as Manichitrathazhu starring Shobhana, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi. Not surprisingly, Shobhana won the National Award for Best Actress for her role considering that the entire script revolves around her and provided her ample opoprtunity to showcase her histrionic talents.
setting is a small, conservative and superstitious village. Manoj Joshi (Badri), the head of a Brahmin family, owns an ancestral palace which the villagers believe is haunted. One day, the son and daughter-in-law of Manoj's elder brother, Shiney Ahuja (Siddharth) and Vidya Balan (Avni), return to their native village from America. Soon, unnatural events start happening in the palace with the blame place squarely on Radha (Amesha Patel), the adopted daughter of Badri. The villagers and the inhabitants of the palace are by now�convinced that the palace is indeed haunted.
It is at this time that Dr. Aditya, a psychiatrist from America and a friend of Shiney, arrives on the scene. Using modern psycho-analytical techniques, the doctor is determined to find out the reason behind the haunting and events.
From this point on, the movie is a blend of thrill and humor revealing untold depths of the human psyche and a superb ending which will keep viewers glued to their seats. Manichitrathazhu has been remade in Kannada and Tamil although none could equal the original. All were commercial hits. Will Priyadarshan, the director of Bhool Bhulaiyaa , manage to recreate that magic? Let us wait and watch.
