From hosting a TV show to making big-banner, big-budget, multi-starrers, Kunal Kohli has indeed come a long way. Though he had a flop debut in Bollywood (Mujhse Dosti Karoge), but the phenomenal success of Hum Tum (for which he won the best director’s award in 2004) and Fanaa (one of the few big hits of 2006) have helped him gain a strong foothold in the industry.

As they say that failures are the pillars of success, Kunal says, “Before Hum Tum and Fanaa, I flopped because I was trying to be Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and Sooraj Barjatya.”

"And having learnt that, I tried to bring out my own self in the films.” All said and done, we could not help but ask him how will Fanaa fare at the soon-to-begin awards season?

“The award season undoubtedly belongs to Rang De Basanti or Lage Raho Munnabhai,” he says, adding, “But the best actress award belongs to Kajol

So do awards matter to him? “Yes and no both.” Clearing it further, Kunal says, “Yes because applauds are encouraging and welcomed always. No because my film has earned its share in terms of box-office returns and viewers’ response.”

Cut to real life, the young director says, “My life is only about films.” Is that all? “No, I love socialising and unlike the general notion, most of my friends are from the industry whom I meet over tea and play games with.” His cup of joy is surely success which is brimming over.
