Atul Kulkarni has four releases lined up this year. Rakeysh Mehra’s Delhi-6, N.Chandra’s Yeh Mera India, Farukh Kabir’s Allah Ke Bande and Sagar Bellary’s Kachcha Limboo.
"I am excited about all the three films as they are of different genres. In Rakeysh’s film, I had the chance to work with veteran actors. Kachcha Limboo is a children’s film. It is about a teenager and his traumas and problems in life told in a lighter vein. N. Chandra’s Yeh Mera India is about six different stories intermingled with one anther. Then Farukh Kabir’s Allah Ke Bande, which is set in the Dharavi, is about two friends and how differently they react to a given situation. It is all about underworld, which dominated the Dharavi’s in the 70s."
Atul is more excited about Rakeysh Mehra’s Delhi-6. The talented actor reveals that the film has an ensemble cast of Waheeda Rehman, Prem Chopra, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri, Supriya Pathak, Divya Dutta, Pawan Malhotra and Vijay Raaz alongwith Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam in the lead. But he says the script of the film is one step ahead where writing is concerned.
"It is a great script and has been written with a lot of conviction. I can’t reveal much about the character but yes I am playing the role of Gobar and my character in the film is 180 degrees opposite Laxman Pandey in Rang De Basanti. Laxman was a confident man whereas Gobar is completely an introvert.
I was shocked when Rakeysh offered me this role. He even asked me to lose a lot of weight for this role. I lost around 10 kgs.
He was so confident when he put me in this character sketch. Hence it’s a special film for me. Plus I had the opportunity of working with veteran actors like Waheeda Rehman, Prem Chopra and Om Puri in the film."
Speaking about his experience on the sets with Waheeda Rehman, Atul says, "She exudes so much confidence. I can never forget what the actress told me while we were chatting on the sets. She said that when she accepted Guide, people often chided her for taking up the role. But she took it up because she believed in the role. Now I feel that every actor must take up roles that satisfy him regardless of the banner or the director."
