In a new twist to the controversy over India's official entry for the Oscar award, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of USA has given Film Federation of India (FFI) time till October 17 to reaffirm its original entry Amitabh Bachchan-starrer "Eklavya" in foreign language category or send an alternate entry.
FFI Chairman Vinod Pande said that the Academy conveyed this in a letter to the Federation. The letter came in FFI's response to the Academy's earlier letter raising some questions about the controversy over the selection of "Eklavya" for the Oscars this year, Pande said.
The nomination of "Eklavya", which also stars Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan, has been challenged in the Bombay High Court by director Bhavna Talwar whose movie "Dharam" featuring Pankaj Kapoor lost out for the entry.
The court had said that prima facie there appeared to bias in selection of "Eklavya". The first letter from the Academy expressed concern over the "confusing situation" that had developed with respect to India's entry and epressed surprise that Indian courts were adjudicating "aesthetic decisions like selecting films".
The letter asked FFI to have more defensible internal standards for selecting entries for the Academy Awards. Pandey said that in response "I wrote that I was amused by the letter from the Academy as there was no communication with it in this regard.
"I emphasised on the point that India has strong democratic values and there is high respect for judiciary which has every right to get involved in giving justice to the aggrieved," Pande said.
