Has Bollywood run out of new ideas or are sequels a quick way to cash in on the brand value created by a successful film?
Thereâs a buzz in the air about two forthcoming films, Rakesh Roshanâs Krrish, releasing next week and Vidhu Vinod Chopraâs Munnabhai 2 Innings due for release in August. The trade is very excited over the fate of these two films since it is the Sequel to their earlier hit films with the same characters & cast. Munnabhai M.B.B.S, the prequel to the much awaited Munnabhai 2 Innings was a huge hit and the characters of Munna (Sanjay Dutt) and Circuit (Arshad Warsi) will light up the screen once again. Rakesh Roshanâs sci fi thriller Koi Mil Gaya was the biggest hit of the year and its sequel Krrish will have Hrithik Roshan spreading a lot of âjadooâ once again. Unfortunately this time for the kids, there will be no âjadooâ but the powers that he passed on to Rohit in Koi Mil Gaya have now been passed on to his son, Krishna , in Krrish.
The trade is very buoyant about sequels after the fantastic âinitialâ and box office success of Phir Hera Pheri, the sequel to the comic caper hit Hera Pheri. Box Office analysts predict a bumper response to forthcoming sequels like Dhoom 2 too. However there is just a little apprehension since sequels are a very âHollywoodianâ concept. We can expect Hollywood blockbusters like the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman Series but Bollywood efforts like Nigahen (Nagina) or Phir Lehraya Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka (Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka), or Hathyar (sequel to Vaastav) and Excuse Me (sequel to Style) didnât click at the box office. But one cannot ignore the fact that Hollywood sequels left a lot to desire in comparison to their prequels. Distributor Rakesh Sippy says, âJust because most Hollywood sequels havenât worked, thereâs no reason why sequels shouldnât work in Bollywood.â
But arenât high expectations of peopleâs from a sequel a point of worry for the filmmakers! Actor Arif Zakaria told us just before watching âPhir Hera Pheriâ. âEven if makes me laugh fifty percent to what Hera Pheri did, Iâll be happy. But Iâm very eager to see the trio, Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar , and Suniel Shetty, again. They were superb in Hera Pheri.â Although Phir Hera Pheri has been proved a super hit, most people still preferred its prequel Hera Pheri. They found the humour very forced in the sequel. A week before the release of Krrish, Rakesh Roshan is not in the least worried about peopleâs expectations from his sequel. âI donât worry about peopleâs expectations as I donât know what exactly their expectations are. Iâm only concerned with making a good film to the best of my abilities.â
However the success of Phir Hera Pheri has paved the way for more sequels as the audience is gradually accepting the new storylines with the films earlier or even new characters. The reason for sequels being popular now is the tremendous brand value created by the huge success of the prequels. But most times the reason for a sequel is a cheap way to cash in on the success and popularity of the first. Most movie makers donât even think about sequels because the audience wants them so much, they do it for the sake of it. This results in a substandard film that simply fails to live up to peopleâs expectations. Distributor Rakesh Sippy agrees that the filmmaker is cashing in on the success of a film when planning a sequel. âItâs like selling a well-established brand. As a distributor, I would definitely pick up the film as Iâm assured of the brand. The pre-release hype around these films is much more as people feel that they are on familiar terrain.â At times it could also be a case of Bollywood getting bored of drawing inspiration from Hollywood classics. So it lapped up Hollywoodâs idea of making sequels.
Comparing Bollywood to Hollywood, itâs seen that although comedy is popular in Hindi cinema now it is the horror films in Hollywood which are the perfect recipe for a sequel. The Nightmare On Elm Street or the Halloween series is big in Hollywood. But horror is not such a good bet at the box office in Bollywood so for the present sci-fi, action, and comedy will reign at the âsequelâ ticket window. Now the producers of No Entry , Bluffmaster , Kya Kool Hain Hum, and Alag have already announced their plans of a sequel. Madhur Bhandarkar is planning a sequel to Chandni Bar today. âThereâs nothing definite. Itâs just an idea that struck me when the entire bar controversy happened. I wanted to show what happens to these girls. I donât even have to make a sequel. It could be a completely new dimension to the subject. But Iâll make it only if I feel that it can be made in a proper way,â he says. Even Rakesh Roshan has announced his sequel to Krrish if it becomes a success at the box office. Itâs almost like one canât make a film today without having a sequel to it. All in all, looks like sequels are here to stay!
