All you Maddy fans out there, it’s time to rejoice as his new film Arya releases this Friday (Aug 10) worldwide. The actor is on a roll as he has corporates and hotshot directors lining up to meet him but he has no dates till next year! As Maddy heads for the shoot of Seeman directed Vazhthukkal at a posh bungalow near Valasaravakkam in Chennai in his black Mitsubishi Pajero, he speaks about Arya.
Your last release Rendu was about 10 months back. Why was there such a huge gap for your next release?
(Smiles) Actually I have finished work on Evano Oruvan, Leelai and almost 80 percent of Vazhthukkal. It was sheer coincidence that we could not release Evano Oruvan during summer due to the delay in release of Sivaji Added to that it is such an amazing film that we wanted a dignified release with lot of publicity and smart marketing. As far as Leelai is concerned its producer Gaurav Sharma is missing for the last 5 months (Laughs) ! I have completed work and it’s his job to do the post production and release the film.
What is Arya all about? Is it another mass masala entertainer?
It will be an extremely entertaining film with good twists and turns. Some where around the making of the film we all (Prakash, Bhavana , Vadivel and me) got exasperated due to delay. But after seeing the film I am surprised by the way it has shaped out. It’s truly going to be a rocking movie.
The one-line story of Arya ?
It is about the love-hate relationship between my character Arya and the heroine (Bhavana) who are from two different school of thoughts. I am a person who is straight and goes by the law while she is the sister of a local goonda who is arrogant and wants to achieve everything by hook or crook. It’s like taming of the shrew and finally true love triumphs. Mani Sharma’s songs are foot tapping which will be hot for the season.
Are you comfortable doing mass masala movies?
Not really. Coming from the Mani Ratnam School of films it’s very difficult. But doing films in such genre is very important for any actor. Tamil cinema has always been associated with mass masala entertainers and it is essential that I do them to reach across to the mass audiences who love such potboilers. Let me be frank, I’m not here to change the system. I will be doing at least one such film every year.
Has Bhavana become your hot favorite? You have repeated her after `Arya` in Vazhthukkal?
How I wish, I had the privilege to choose my heroines! It was Seeman’s decision to cast her in Vazhthukkal and I never opposed as I think she is one of the best performers around.
Your films have a huge market overseas. And reports say that Arya has been sold at record price, the highest ever for a Madhavan film overseas. Please comment?
(Laughs) Now you know that Madhavan’s mass masala films have demand outside India? A film like Arya which was delayed and is not the typical Madhavan type of film getting such a price overseas is very good sign.
