“Onir is a very sensitive director,” says actor Jimmy Shergil who is having an eventful year. After playing the dumb guy in the hit film ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’, this cool dude went on to be a part of Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial venture ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’ where her lovemaking scenes with Konkana Sensharma were talked about at length by the reviewers. He is having back to back releases in ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (A cameo) and ‘Bas Ek Pal’ where he is teaming up with the likes of Sanjay Suri, Urmila Matondkar and Juhi Chawla in ‘My Brother Nikhil’s’ director Onir’s second film which he terms as a film about “Urban Relationships”. In an exclusive interview with IndiaGlitz, the good looking actor with impeccable manners discloses why he is not an insecure actor.

How has been the journey from ‘Maachis’ to ‘Bas Ek Pal’?

It’s been slow but steady. I am more than happy. It’s been almost eleven years now. To be still around and getting work is nice.
How was working with Gulzar Sahab in your first film?

It was overwhelming. To be part of a film like ‘Maachis’, a story that you can relate to as I am a Sardar and a Punjabi and from the North. And at the same time getting a break with Gulzar sahab was worth it. I knew I am going to learn the basics of acting.
What is ‘Bas Ek Pal’ all about?

It’s about four five people who either get to know each other, some of them already know each other from before. Everything was going nice in their life when all of a sudden an incident happens in their life which changes everyone’s life. And how everyone deals with those situations is what ‘Bas Ek Pal’ all about. Me and Sanjay are two friends from school. Sanjay goes off to US while I am a successful businessman in Mumbai. The story starts when Sanjay is back from US. I have another friend Rehaan (Engineer), then there’s Urmila and Juhi.
Whom are you cast opposite?

There’s nobody opposite nobody in the film. That’s the complexity of the situation. Otherwise it becomes a very simple film. That this one is opposite this one and this one is alone. And this is what the story.
How is Onir as a Director?

Fantastic. I have known for him years now. I’ve known him since ‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’. I read quite a few of his scripts and I always believed that he can make sensible films. Finally he made ‘My Brother Nikhil’ which I’ve seen…He is a very sensitive director. But after that he didn’t want to get into that slot that I made ‘MBN’ and now I shall make films like that. He knows that he is a sensitive director and he wants to make different films and not get into one particular kind of phenomenon. That’s why this bold step of making this film on urban relationships ‘Bas Ek Pal’.
What about music of ‘Bas Ek Pal’?

Yeah music is very good. It has good very good reviews as well. The promotion is also very nice. Onir has always been a very musical person. He always had this knack of picking up good music for the film. In this film he had this scope even though it is not a complete song and dance film, but there are some situations where you can have good numbers.
You have a small role in ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’ but your look is very hep

I got a call from Naseer Bhai and Shabbir Boxwala, the producer happens to be a good friend of mine. I told Shabbir that I have to be a part of this film. Cut To Six or Seven months I get to know that I am not a part of the film. Cut to six or seven months, I got a call from Shabbir that dude you have to be a part of the film. I was in New York at that part of time. He told me that the moment you are back I shall ask Naseer Bhai to give you a narration but I said that I need no narration, I am doing it. Now it feels really good when you read Naseer Bhai’s interviews that he is so happy and thankful to Jimmy for doing a small character at the last minute. I personally feel that I am hungry but I am not insecure. So, I didn’t have any insecurity. I just wanted to be a part of Naseer Bhai’s first film for the respect I have for him as an actor. And the eight to ten days that I shot for him were amazing as I had so much of fun working with him. I hope he makes more films.
You are a part of ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’

I am there…See my character Zaheer in ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ had died. Now, ‘Lage Raho Munnbhai’ is a completely different story. Munnabhai and Circuit are the only things which are similar about the earlier film. The entire set-up around them has been completely changed. So, you have Boman Irani playing a different character in the film, I am playing a different character in the film. I had told Raju that I have to be a part of the film. I have two scenes in the film but I am very happy.
What are your forthcoming films?

‘Lage Raho Munnbhai’, ‘Bas Ek Pal’, ‘Eklavya’, ‘Delhi Heights’, there’s a film with Raj Kanwar. In fact there are lots of films which are in the pipeline.
