“Why do I have to establish myself any further! I am not doing the films that today’s heroines are doing,” says Juhi Chawla as she gears up for the release of her next film ‘Bas Ek Pal’ directed by Onir. Juhi came like a breath of fresh air with ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ opposite Aamir Khan and went on to do a string of successful films like ‘Darr’, ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke’, ‘Yes Boss’ ‘Ishq’ etc. Today she is settled with two kids but continues to look radiant. In the last few years she is heading towards more meaningful films like ‘Teen Deewarein’, ‘Jhankaar Beats’ and ‘My Brother Nikhil’. ‘Bas Ek Pal’ is another interesting looking film she has committed herself to wholeheartedly. Over to an IndiaGlitz exclusive with woman with a winsome charm:

What is ‘Bas Ek Pal’ all about?

It’s about five people. A mishap happens, then the reason of that mishap and how that incident changes their lives is what this film is all about.
Were you an automatic choice since you had done ‘My Brother Nikhil’?

Onir gave me the script and told me to go through it and told me that this is the first script he wrote. He said he liked it and would like to make it into a film. There’s a character that I’d like you to do it. Till then the castig had not taken place, only five names were there and the scenes keep on happening between them. Initially, I wasn’t able to understand it. Then after a few months he came to narrate it to me. By then Urmila, Sanjay, Rehan and Jimmy were finalized. I started looking the film. It’s an intense film and I loved it. There’s not a single moment that you can predict in this film. Very interesting script…
How many days did you shoot for the film?

I shot for around fifteen days. Each character is playing a crucial part. You can’t take out any one character. I agree my role is not all that big but it’s an important role. And you’ll realize it when you see the film.
The music is doing very well…

The music is very nice. And its very apt. There’s no song which has been put unnecessarily. Some songs are in the background, some establish the relationship or bring about a tender moment or feeling. The lyrics are matching the moments in the film. My favourite is of course where I am…’Dheemay Dheemay’ I really like it….My other favourite is ‘Zindagi Hosh Mein’.
How different is it from ‘My Brother Nikhil’?

It is very different. The subject is different. Even the look is different as well. Onir did not allow us to do any make up. Even if I used to apply a bit, then he’d come and watch me closely…Even the cameraman would stand in front of my nose and tell me to remove that small bit. I used to say please let me do slightly as I can see some blemish…But it was not allowed. In ‘Bas Ek Pal’ he gave us some scope. Of course it’s not as glossy as big films like ‘Kabhi Alvida…’ But it’s better than ‘Bas Ek Pal’.
How was Sanjay Suri as a co-star?

When I worked with Sanjay for the first time (Jhankaar Beats), then all of them were new for me. Sujoy Ghosh, the director. I had heard about Rahul Bose. I had this curiosity to know them well. It was not the usual people like Shahrukh Ji or Govinda with whom I have worked with. So, I was jovial with them so that everybody will mix well. Later I came to know that they were scared of me thinking how I must be behaving like a star. But in that film I came to know them well. Then we did ‘My Brother Nikhil’…It was a good film…A small film but good film…Even ‘Bas Ek Pal’ is not a big film…But I am hoping it is appreciated for the subject.
Do you think you are facing competition from the new breed of actresses?

(Laughs) I am around for so many years now. Why do I have to establish myself any further! I am not doing the films that today’s heroines are doing. Then why do I have to worry about the commercial angle…I am doing films that I like…They may not be mainstream….But they are interesting…
