Shimit Amin’s Chak De India took the entire nation by storm with its ‘inspiring’ prowess. Leave alone Hockey, Chak De went on to become the winning mantra of even the Indian Cricket team! Will Goal which apparently runs on the lines of Chak De be able to overtake its illustrious predecessor in terms of box office collection? Renuka Vyavahare chats up Goal director Vivek Agnihotri to find out an answer...
What is Goal all about?
Goal is about the triumph of human spirit. A bunch of losers challenge the system and how they handle difficult times is the story of the film. It’s a simple story, simply told.
John plays a footballer. Is his character based on any famous footballer?
John looks like Christiano Ronaldo but that’s where the similarity ends. His character is fictional and not based on any football player.
Bipasha is playing a very different role in this film...
Bipasha is a physiotherapist in the film. Since my football team in the film is poor, they cannot afford any big shot physios to look after them and thus Bipasha comes to picture as she is the sister of Arshad Warsi in the film and he requests her to do the needful for his team.
A sexy physiotherapist...?
Regretfully, Bipasha is not playing ‘sexy’ in Goal . However, I’d like to say, ‘being sexy’ depends on one’s mind and not body. Exposing and showing skin is not sexy to me, besides Bipasha is a kind of woman who looks sexy no matter what she wears.
A lot was said and written about Arshad’s tiff with John on the sets of Goal .
It was all media created and I have no problems with it. Media does its job. John and Arshad are good friends and few differences if any arise everywhere. It’s nothing new or unusual.
Chak De was also a film based on sports and triumph of human spirit, don’t you feel Goal will be thus adversely affected as the subject may seem repetitive?
Chak De is one of the finest films of Indian cinema however; Goal has its own charm. Chak De was just inspiring. Goal is inspiring and entertaining. It’s a different film and Chak De ’s success will not affect Goal. Besides this is not a matter of life and death. It’s a simple film and I am sure people will like it.
Why not a film on Cricket?
Cricket is boring! Just because Cricket is the most popular game in India doesn’t mean films have to be made on it! There is not a single successful Cricket magazine in India. Why?
