Sanjay Suri talks about moving on after opting out of Sunglass

Sanjay Suri is overcome with mixed emotions. While he is excited about his forthcoming venture Bas Ek Pal (directed by Onir of My Brother Nikhil fame) he is equally disappointed at missing out on Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass.

The actor was finalised after Arshad Warsi quoted an astronomical amount for the film, but at the last moment decided to step out of it too. "Ritu and I never had a problem. I had some reservations about the character and wasn't excited about it. They decided to sign Madhavan for the role instead. In fact, Madhavan had called me to ask if I did not mind him doing the film," says Sanjay.

Made in two languages the film also stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Naseeruddin Shah and Jaya Bachchan. "Ritu had narrated just one line of the story and I liked it. But when I realised that the role offered to me wouldn't take me ahead as an actor, I decided to part amicably with Rituparno and producer Arindam Choudhury," explains Sanjay.

As if to say that he will be recreating the My Brother Nikhil experience, his character in Bas Ek Pal is called Nikhil too. "Onir has a very bad memory and can't remember names, so if you notice carefully he has repeated the names of the character from My Brother Nikhil in Bas Ek Pal," says Sanjay.

Having said that, he feels Onir has matured as a director. "He deals with several characters and multi-layered emotions. He has used colour to convey the nature of the person," says Sanjay. This will also be Sanjay's third venture with Juhi Chawla and second with Urmila Matondkar. "We have gone through a range of relationships on screen. In Jhankar Beats she played my wife, in My Brother Nikhil she played my sister and now in Bas Ek Pal she plays my friend. Juhi is an extremely secure person and doesn't bother about what others are doing," he says.

"With Urmila, in Pinjar we hardly had any scenes together, because she went to Pakistan and I had to stay back in India. But working with her I have realised that she is extremely professional. And when I say professional I don't mean just reporting on time. She has her own level of involvement in the project."
