Pakistani actress Meera talks about her Hollywood project Romeo and Juliet, playing Chandramukhi in the Pakistani version of Devdas, and marriage.
Have you received an offer from Hollywood?
Yes, I am doing a Hollywood film, Romeo and Juliet. I am playing Juliet. This is my first English film, it will be shot in London. I think it's one of the finest love stories written to date. In fact, many Hindi films have been based on the same plot, but it's always challenging to act in a film which is based on the original text. The film will go on the floors next year, as they are yet to finalise Romeo for the film.
Have you seen the other versions of Romeo and Juliet which Hollywood has produced in the past?
No, and I don't want to. I would like to do it my own way. If I see those films now, then subconsciously I may try to imitate other actors. And my portrayal won't be original. I am confident as an actor and I am sure I will do justice to the part.
It seems you had some discord with director Mahesh Bhatt when he promised to sign you for his film on Parveen Babi, but eventually signed Kangana for the role. Are you upset with him?
I was interested in Parveen Babi's role, but the confusion was that, I was not aware about Maheshji making two films based on Parveen Babi's life. He was making Akelapan and Awarapan, I don't know which film he wanted to sign me. So when I read that he has signed Kangana for the role, I was naturally upset. But Maheshji has sorted things out, he has signed me for Akelepan, which is also based on the life of an actress. Emraan Hashmi is cast opposite me.
You are playing the role of Chandramukhi in Devdas. How different will you be from Madhuri Dixit in Bhansali's Devdas?
I think Devdas was Madhuri's best performance by far. But this is the first time Devdas will be made in Pakistan. Saroj Khan has trained me in classical dancing for the film.
Apparently noted music director Ismail Durbar is making his debut as a producer and he has cast you?
Yes. He is producing a film titled Simran , where I am playing the lead role.
Are you single? Have you ever been in love?
Yes, unfortunately I am single. No, I have never been in a relationship. But I would love to fall in love. Three years from now I'll be married. I'll marry someone from Bollywood. I think it's always better for an actress to marry someone from the industry, for better understanding with one's husband. Now, I am part of Bollywood, I consider India my own country.
