Raj Santoshi has no dates for Bharadwaj’s film

All reports about Raj Santoshi's decision to do a cameo in Vishal Bharadwaj's production No Smoking will now have to be braked.

According to Santoshi, he is unlikely to do the needful for the film. "Much as I believe in director Anurag Kashyap and even if I liked his earlier work Black Friday, I don't know how I can fit his film into my schedule. I'm nearly done with my film Halla Bol with Ajay Devgan and Vidya Balan. It's shaping up much better than any of us expected. Now when I'm at the last lap of filming I can't possibly take a break to act. In any case I'm not much of an actor. But I must tell you, Anurag isn't the first director to offer me a role. Earlier I did a part in Santosh Sivan's children's film Halo. I did so because I believed in the subject."

Santoshi will complete Halla Bol and plunge into his next project London Dreams with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. "I need to get all my commitments out of the way by the end of 2007. At the end of the year I go into my ambitious Ramayan. Once I start work on Ramayan, I won't be thinking of any other project."

Going by the way period films and costume dramas including Santoshi's own The Legend Of Bhagat Singh have fared isn't the director worried about the fate of the film? "Not at all. My Bhagat Singh may not have worked at the box office. But I got unqualified praise for it. No one disliked it. And I've never been afraid of going into the unknown. I did an episodic film Lajja much before it became fashionable."
