Bipasha Basu isn’t feeling insecure about Aishwarya Rai or Mallika Sherawat She’s got loads of compliments for her performances this year, a Best Actress award tucked away, new films and John Abraham by her side. We cornered the Bengali bombshell for a quick chat.
You won the Best Actress award at GIFA for Corporate
It feels really good. I never thought I would get it. It’s like endorsing the work that I have done. I have had some good releases this year — Corporate , Omkara and Dhoom 2 — and the appreciation I have got has been tremendously encouraging.
A lot of people felt you didn’t deserve the award.
Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and I am not going to contest it. There will always be a section in support of me and a section against me. I feel good about winning an award for Corporate, as it’s a small-budget, woman-centric film with great actors.
Coming to Dhoom 2, many felt you were wasted in the film.
I don’t think so. It’s just that people love me too much and wants to see more of me! It’s a look-oriented fun flick and not a performance-oriented one. It was meant to showcase Hrithik’s stunts. The cast complemented each other. The compliments for my look and role are still flowing in. I’m looking my best and the purpose has been achieved. I wanted to play a serious and dumb role, which I did.
What’s the best compliment you got for Dhoom 2?
I have been flooded with compliments by little girls who call me bratz doll, another version of Barbie. Kids love me in that. They come up to me, giggle and call me Monali.
What’s happening with Abbas-Mustan’s Mr Fraud with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan?
We should start that by next year. All the best to Sanju and I wish him well. He’s a good man and has suffered enough. Sanju needs to come out of it.
What’s next?
On January 8, I begin shooting for Abbas-Mustan’s Race in Australia with Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and I think Mallika Sherawat. She was there earlier but I think there are some problems now. She might not be doing the film. It’s a racy, intelligent thriller. I will be out of India for five months. After Race, I will be flying off to London for Goal.
Two bombshells in a film. No insecurities?
None at all. I’d love to share screen space with Mallika. She suits the role perfectly. For me, the right casting is important, as that would add value to the film. I don’t have time for insecurities.
Vivek Agnihotri’s soccer film, Goal, will your first film with John after a long time.
Yes. It’s a fantastic film and one John and I have immense faith in. we are both choosing interesting films. I play a Pakistani medic from Southall, the official physio-therapist to the soccer team. There is a newness to the character.
Any comments on the John-Salman cold war?
No comments. Please keep me out of this.
What will you be doing on your birthday (January 7)?
I never work on my birthday. There are no plans apart from spending time with the people I love. I don’t do parties.
John’s birthday is on December 17…
Yes and he’s not an occasion person either. I used to plan things for his birthday earlier, but this year, he should do it the way he likes it. He should do what he wants to do.
